What does a small business automation consultant do?

A plain-English answer to what a small business automation consultant does: find the repeated admin, build the workflow, keep you in control.

A small business automation consultant finds the work your team repeats every week and builds the workflow that carries it, using the software you already have. I am tech agnostic. I work with traditional stacks and new ones, and I will not set you up on something I do not trust.

What the work actually is

Most small businesses are not short of effort. They are short of hours, because the same tasks repeat: re-typing details, chasing follow-ups, moving work between apps that do not talk to each other.

The scale of the problem is well documented. Surveys of small business employees find 94% do repetitive, time-consuming tasks in their role, and 44% say they are not highly efficient or productive in their day-to-day work. [Zapier] That is the problem space.

A consultant starts by finding those tasks. Then they build a workflow: when something arrives, the software drafts the reply, pre-fills the records and routes the work. A person approves what goes out. The result is recorded in one place. The measure of good work is that the system gets simpler, not more complicated.

What a consultant does not do

They do not sell you a new stack. They do not replace your judgment with AI. They do not lock you into their accounts. Everything is built in your accounts, on your stack, under your ownership.

How to tell a good one

Ask three questions. Do you build in our tools or yours? What happens when a workflow breaks? Do we get documentation we can run without you? The answers should be: ours, it alerts us and we fix it, and yes.

What it costs

A single workflow is usually a fixed price from about $500 and live in 5 to 7 business days. A broader pipeline build runs from about $1,500. Anything bigger is scoped before work starts.

The point is not more software. It is the hours coming back to your team and the work that was already earned finally making it to the invoice.

Questions

Do I need an automation consultant if I have software?

Software only helps if it is set up around how you work. Most small businesses have the tools. The problem is the setup and the handoffs between them.

Will automation replace my staff?

No. Automation removes the repeated admin so your team can do the work that earns. That is the point.

What is the first thing we automate?

The repeated step that costs the most hours. Usually that is enquiries, follow-up or document assembly. We find it together in a free audit.
