Self-hosted workflow automation, honestly
Self-hosting n8n or Activepieces saves money and keeps data private. What you gain, what you take on.

Self-hosted automation is the favourite of the technical crowd, and for good reason. It is also a trade, not a free lunch.
What you gain
- Cost. A flat server cost replaces per-task pricing. At high volume, this is dramatically cheaper.
- Privacy. Your data stays on your infrastructure. No vendor processes your customers’ details.
- Control. You can extend with code, and nothing disappears when a vendor changes pricing.

What you take on
- Maintenance. Updates, backups, uptime and security patches are yours.
- Setup. It takes technical time to host and maintain.
- Support. When something breaks, you are the helpdesk.
Who it fits
Businesses with volume high enough that per-task pricing hurts, a technical owner or a consultant who maintains it, and a need for data control.
Who it does not fit
A two-person business that wants a workflow live this week, with no one to maintain a server.
The honest recommendation
If you have the volume and the technical help, self-hosting is excellent. If not, a managed tool is the right call, and the per-task bill is the price of not thinking about servers.
The right answer is the one you can actually operate. That is the rule that beats every other comparison.

A flat server cost instead of per-task pricing, and full control of where your data lives.
What is the cost?
You maintain the server: updates, backups and uptime. That is real work, not free.
