Make vs Zapier vs n8n for small business

The honest comparison of the three most common automation platforms for small business: billing, ease, control and when each wins.

Nikolas Gannon · · 1 min read · Productivity

Make, Zapier and n8n are the three most common automation platforms for small business. The honest question is not which is best, but which fits each workflow.

Zapier: easiest, but watch the bill

Zapier is the easiest to start: thousands of connections, simple triggers and a huge library. For simple, low-volume workflows it is the fastest path. The catch is per-task pricing: every step a workflow runs is a task, and complex workflows at volume get expensive quickly.

Make: the visual middle

Make is the visual builder. You see the flow and branch it with drag-and-drop, and it bills per operation, which is often cheaper than per-task at volume. It suits people who want control without code.

n8n: control and cost at a price

n8n is open source and can be self-hosted for a flat server cost. That makes it the cheapest at high volume and the best for data control. The price is maintenance: someone has to run the server, apply updates and keep it up.

The comparison table

Zapier Make n8n
Ease Easiest Visual Technical
Billing Per task Per operation Flat / self-hosted
Best for Simple flow Visual builders Volume, privacy, control
Maintenance None None You or a consultant

The honest note

Do not pick the platform first. Pick the workflow first, then price it on two platforms. The same workflow can cost very different amounts depending on the billing unit, and that is the number that should decide.

Questions

Which is easiest for a non-technical owner?

Zapier, then Make. n8n needs more technical comfort unless someone maintains it for you.

Which is cheapest at volume?

n8n self-hosted, then Make on per-operation billing. Zapier per-task pricing grows fastest.

Do I have to choose one?

No. Many businesses run a mix, with the platform matching the workflow.
